At 14:28 on May 12, 2008, a deadly earthquake of 8.0 Richter scale hit Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province. It was the most devastating earthquake that affected the largest area since the founding of new China. China Life paid a claim settlement of 378 million RMB yuan, donated an aggregate sum of 60 million RMB yuan and started to raise 624 earthquake orphans.
